Police kill La. bank hostage taker; 1 hostage dies

ST. JOSEPH, La. (AP) ? A man who took hostages at a bank in rural Louisiana shot the two remaining hostages, killing one of them, before being shot and killed by police, authorities said.

During negotiations with law enforcement late Tuesday, the suspect ? identified as 20-year-old Fuaed (FOO-od) Abdo Ahmed ? said he was going to kill the hostages, Louisiana State Police superintendent Col. Mike Edmonson said. State police then entered the building just before midnight Tuesday.

That's when Ahmed shot the two hostages and then state police shot and killed him, Edmonson said. Edmonson said the hostages were shot in the upper body. He did not have any other information on the condition of the second hostage who was shot.

The hostages were both shot with a handgun, but Edmonson said Ahmed was also armed with a rifle.

The gunman initially took two women and a man captive around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Tensas State Bank branch in St. Joseph. He later released one of the female hostages.

Edmonson said authorities were able to put Ahmed on the phone with a friend in Alaska during negotiations and that was key in getting him to release one of the hostages. But Edmonson also said the man grew increasingly erratic as negotiations went on, sometimes hanging up on police.

Edmonson said Ahmed was a paranoid schizophrenic who believed a device had been implanted in his brain and that the situation was not a bank robbery attempt but a planned attack.

"He was mad at people that he said were mean to him," Edmonson said. "He had voices in his head."

But Edmonson said there was no indication Ahmed had any history with the bank employees and they did not know why he picked the bank. The bank sits across the street from a service station owned by Ahmed's family.

"These were good, God-fearing people," he said of the hostages.

The suspect also had a duffel bag that contained items he was going to torture the hostages with, Edmonson said.

"His intent was to inflict pain and kill these individuals," he said.

Hollywood studios say China resumes payments after tax settlement

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - China has agreed to resume payments owed to the U.S. film industry after the two sides resolved a tax dispute, the Motion Picture Association of America, a trade group for Hollywood studios, said on Tuesday.

The MPAA said the China Film Group Corp, a state-owned distributor, had stopped payments to the Hollywood studios because of problems with a new value-added tax applied across China on August 1.

The MPAA did not say when the payments stopped, but the film trade publication Variety said they might have been withheld as far back as March and that the amount owed to Hollywood studios could exceed $200 million.

"We are pleased to hear that the Chinese government has addressed the matter and all money due will be paid in full," said MPAA chief executive and chairman Chris Dodd. "It is our understanding that the payment process has recommenced."

The Chinese group had wanted to deduct the tax from what the studios earn in ticket sales in what is now the second-biggest film market.

Under a 2012 agreement between the Chinese and U.S. governments, the American studios increased their share of revenue to 25 percent of the Chinese box office from a previous rate of between 13.5 percent and 17.5 percent.

Deducting the new tax would have cut the studios' take by 2 percentage points.

Prior to the 2012 agreement, U.S. studios had long complained of China's tight restrictions on foreign films, which they said helped fuel demand for pirated DVDs that are widely available in China.

Atlanta boy goes on transplant list after earlier refusal: family

By David Beasley

ATLANTA (Reuters) - A 15-year-old Atlanta boy went on the waiting list for a heart transplant two days after his family complained he was unfairly rejected because of past failure to take medicine and show up for doctor's appointments, his family told a TV station on Tuesday.

Anthony Stokes has an enlarged heart and could have less than six months to live without a transplant, his family said. Relatives told Atlanta television station WSB that Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Hospital had reversed course and added him to the wait list on Tuesday.

The family did not say why he was uncooperative, and the hospital would neither confirm or deny the reason, citing patient privacy.

"As we stated previously, a heart transplant evaluation is an ongoing process based on the patient and his or her family's ability to meet specific transplant criteria," the hospital said on Tuesday. "Our physician experts are continuing to work with this family to establish a care plan and determine the best next steps for the patient."

Stokes' mother, Melencia Hamilton, told the television station two days ago that hospital officials had refused to put Stokes on the transplant list because of fear he would not comply with medical requirements.

"They said they don't have any evidence that he would take his medicine or that he would go to his follow-ups," Hamilton told WSB on Sunday.

Family members did not respond to Reuters phone calls seeking comment.

Heart transplant patients can become seriously ill and even die if they miss even one day of medication, said Mariell Jessup, president of the American Heart Association.

Hospitals consider a variety of factors besides medical necessity in deciding whether to put a patient on a transplant waiting list, said Joel Newman, a spokesman for the non-profit group, United Network For Organ Sharing.

Among the considerations are whether patients understand the risk, whether they are likely to follow medication schedules and whether they can get to a doctor's office or clinic for regular follow-up care.

Patients can be placed on the waiting list by one transplant center but be turned down at another with different criteria, he added.

Vickers gets full ride with Michael Waltrip Racing

(AP) ? Brian Vickers has a full-time ride again on the Sprint Cup Series.

Michael Waltrip Racing announced Tuesday that Vickers will drive the No. 55 Aaron's Toyota for a full Sprint Cup schedule beginning next season. Andrea Freeman, the vice president of marketing for Aaron's Inc., says the sponsorship deal is for both the 2014 and 2015 seasons.

Vickers said he's "ecstatic" about the decision.

"I feel like I've found a home here at MWR," Vickers told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. "I'm partnered with a great team. A lot of it is about chemistry. Sometimes it's hard to find that right mesh, but when you find it, you know it."

The 29-year-old Vickers has endured plenty of adversity the last three years.

His racing career was derailed in May 2010 when 11 races into the season doctors discovered blood clots in his legs and lungs. Two months later he underwent two procedures to close a hole in his heart and insert a stent into a vein in his left leg.

Vickers said at the time he didn't know if he'd recover, let alone drive a stock car again.

He was medically cleared to return to racing in 2011 but his team struggled and he finished a disappointing 25th in the point standings. After the season he was dealt another blow when Red Bull pulled out of Cup racing leaving Vickers without a full-time ride.

He's been racing part-time on the Cup Series ever since with MWR, sharing a ride with Mark Martin. He's running a full schedule on the Nationwide Series this year for Joe Gibbs Racing.

"It's been a while since I've had a ride, so this feels great," Vickers said with a laugh.

Vickers called the last few years of his life "a rollercoaster ride," but believes his best racing is ahead of him.

"I'm still in my 20s and have more than 10 years of experience and a lot of life lessons that I think will only contribute to more wisdom on the track and more success," he said.

Vickers said getting a full sponsorship deal like this would have made him happy regardless, but given his health problems in recent years it makes it extra special.

He said there were times he didn't know if anyone would ever take a chance on him again.

"Oh, of course," Vickers said. "Between everything that has happened between the health issues and being in the hospital to Red Bull shutting down, did it come to mind? Absolutely.

"But one thing I have learned is you have to live every day one day at a time. You have to make plans for the future but you also have to live in the moment, which is a difficult balance. I've learned that you have to appreciate what you have. That's where I am right now."

It's rare in today's NASCAR world when a driver gets a full-time sponsorship from a company, let alone a two-year deal like Vickers received.

But Aaron's Inc. feels like it made the right choice.

Freeman said she got to know Vickers ? and his inspirational story ? over the past few months and was convinced he was the right man to continue the company's involvement in NASCAR.

"We're really excited about the passion he brings to the sport and feel like he will be a great representative for our brand," Freeman said.

If Aaron's had any questions about Vickers' ability to race ? and more importantly, win ? he and the No. 55 team answered those last month when he won at New Hampshire, snapping a 75-race winless streak on the Cup Series.

"I don't know if made a difference in sealing the deal, but I'm sure it didn't hurt," Vickers said with a laugh.

Team owner Michael Waltrip called Vickers a perfect fit for his team.

"I love his tenacity," Waltrip said at a press conference Tuesday at the NASCAR Hall of Fame. "He just fights and he digs and he's calm. He's not one of those guys on the radio how loses his mind over things going wrong. He just tries to help his team. His ability to work with other drivers is big, too. He just totally gets it."

With sponsorship security at hand, Vickers is turning his attention toward new goals on the track.

"I'm thankful for Aaron's and their sponsorship," Vickers said. "Now we're going to see if we can go out and win a championship or two."
