Wade, James hold off Timberwolves (AP)

MINNEAPOLIS ? Dwyane Wade wasn't about to let the Minnesota Timberwolves spoil LeBron James' birthday.

Wade hit a jumper from the wing, then scored on an inbounds pass from James with 4.6 seconds to play to lift the undefeated Heat to a 103-101 victory over the Wolves on Friday night.

Playing on a sore foot, Wade finished with 19 points, while James had 34 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds on his 27th birthday.

Ricky Rubio had 12 points, 12 assists and six rebounds, and Kevin Love had 25 points and 12 boards for the Timberwolves, who led 100-99 with 55 seconds to play.

But Wade hit a jumper and then lost Rubio on an inbounds play to make the winning bucket, one game after beating the Charlotte Bobcats with a last-second shot.

It was a crushing defeat for the upstart Wolves, who had the mighty Heat on the ropes all fourth quarter thanks to Rubio's brilliance. The Spanish rookie fed open teammates for easy buckets and hit a 3-pointer with 2:28 to play that gave them a 98-94 lead.

But James scored on a crucial three-point play and Anthony Tolliver missed two key free throws in the final minute to give Wade a chance to steal it.

Anthony Randolph had 14 points and Wayne Ellington added 11 off the bench for Minnesota.

Norris Cole scored 12 for the Heat.

It was a thrilling back-and-forth between a star-studded team that counts a loss in the NBA finals as a failure and the young up-and-comers who had lost 17 straight games.

Playing without veteran guard J.J. Barea, who tormented the Heat in the finals with Dallas, because of a strained right hamstring, the Wolves ripped off an 11-0 run in the final period for an 88-83 lead with 7:20 to play.

Chris Bosh kept the Heat in it with some sharp shooting, hitting jumper after jumper just over Love's out-stretched hand.

James turned 27 on Friday, and he said earlier in the day he always plays with a little extra juice on his birthday and the numbers support that. He entered the game averaging 35.3 points, 7.8 rebounds and 5.0 assists in four previous birthday games.

True to form, he scored 15 points in the first quarter, and the Heat flustered the young Wolves into six turnovers and 39 percent shooting. Cole then scored six of the Heat's first eight points in the second quarter for a 39-26 lead, and it looked like Miami was pulling away.

But Rubio, Randolph and Ellington spearheaded a 14-0 run to put the Wolves back in front. Criticized for his shooting before coming to the NBA, Rubio hit an open jumper and added a three-point play for a 49-45 lead. Then he threw an alley-oop pass high over the rim that Randolph threw down, sending the packed Target Center crowd into a frenzy.

Then James turned the third quarter into a one-man dunk contest, soaring through the air for three straight that put the Heat back in control. He threw down a windmill, a baseline lob from Cole and a final one-handed hammer for a 78-72 lead.

NOTES: The Wolves have now sold out both home games, the first time they've sold out two in a row to start a season since 1991-92. It's their first consecutive sellouts since 2003-04, when they went to the Western Conference finals. ... Timberwolves G Malcolm Lee will miss the next six weeks after having surgery on Friday to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee. It's the same knee that was bothering Lee in May, but the team said it was a new injury. ... Heat G/F Mike Miller (hernia) said he is getting close to returning.

Putin resists rerun; Kremlin ideologist out (AP)

MOSCOW ? Facing a swelling wave of public anger over fraud-tainted elections, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin on Tuesday rejected demands for a rerun of the vote, while the Kremlin reassigned the architect of his tightly controlled political system to a job with no apparent domestic political duties.

The order by President Dmitry Medvedev to make Vladislav Surkov a deputy prime minister in charge of economic modernization was variously interpreted as a sign that leaders recognize the need for significant reform and as a cosmetic move with little meaning.

Allegations of fraud in the Dec. 4 national parliamentary election sparked a wave of protests unprecedented in post-Soviet Russia, including two vast rallies in Moscow that attracted tens of thousands. Putin, who was president in 2000-2008, seeks to return to the Kremlin in elections in March, and the protests have undermined his image as the inevitable winner.

Putin and Medvedev have sought to dilute the protests by rolling out a set of proposed political reforms, but have firmly resisted the protest leaders' main demand that the parliament elections be annulled and rerun. Opposition forces also say the proposed reforms are too little and too late.

In a meeting with supporters Tuesday, Putin again took a tough line on the election, saying "there can't be any talk about reviewing it" ? a position likely to lead to more protests.

The protesters have not only denounced the elections, but the entire so-called "managed democracy" political system implemented under Putin, under which parties that do not take their cues from the Kremlin or United Russia have been forced to the far sidelines.

Surkov, whose formal title had been deputy chief of the presidential administration, was seen as the developer of that system. He also is believed to be the creator of the intensely pro-Putin Nashi youth movement despised by the opposition.

Former Finance Minister Alexei Kudrin, a close Putin associate, was quoted by the state news agency RIA Novosti as saying The decision about the departure of Surkov, which I understand was made by Putin and Medvedev, is a very serious order for the renovation of the political system."

But in the view of Mikhail Prokhorov, the tycoon and New Jersey Nets owner who plans to run against Putin in March, "what happened today is no more than the moving of people from one office to another."

Putin on Tuesday urged his supporters to ensure fairness of the presidential vote to prevent any possible criticism, and discussed details of his proposal to put web cameras at all polling stations. He also suggested that all ballot boxes be made transparent.

"As a candidate, I don't need any vote-rigging," Putin said. "I want the election to be maximally transparent. I want to rely on people's will."

Alexei Navalny, an anti-corruption lawyer and popular blogger who has been a key driving force behind the latest protests, vowed that up to a million demonstrators would take to the streets before the presidential election.

Although Putin is seen as still the strongest candidate in the presidential elections, recent polls suggest his support his not enough to win an outright victory in the first round.

His United Russia party retained a slim majority in parliament in the December elections, but lost about 25 percent of its seats. The party's electoral performance, which protesters say would have been even weaker in an honest count, has galvanized opposition forces that were long marginalized under Putin.

Cheetah the chimp from 1930s Tarzan flicks dies (AP)

PALM HARBOR, Fla. ? A Florida animal sanctuary says Cheetah the chimpanzee sidekick in the Tarzan movies of the early 1930s has died at age 80.

The Suncoast Primate Sanctuary in Palm Harbor announced that Cheetah died Dec. 24 of kidney failure.

Sanctuary outreach director Debbie Cobb on Wednesday told The Tampa Tribune ( http://bit.ly/rRuTeJ) that Cheetah was outgoing, loved finger painting and liked to see people laugh. She says he seemed to be tuned into human feelings.

Based on the works of author Edgar Rice Burroughs, the Tarzan stories, which have spawned scores of books and films over the years, chronicle the adventures of a man who was raised by apes in Africa.

Cheetah was the comic relief in the Tarzan films that starred American Olympic gold medal swimmer Johnny Weissmuller. Cobb says Cheetah came to the sanctuary from Weissmuller's estate sometime around 1960.

Cobb says Cheetah wasn't a troublemaker. Still, sanctuary volunteer Ron Priest says that when the chimp didn't like what was going on, he would throw feces.

Glade Spring tornado victims count their blessings at Christmas

GLADE SPRING, Va. ? After the tornado in April, Santa Claus was found in a field behind where Joe Lester?s house used to be.

This month, the three-foot-tall plastic decoration stood lit up in front of Lester?s new house, staked down in case of wind.

?He?d survived a lot already,? said Lester of the faded but still-glowing rendition of St. Nick, ?even being stolen.?

In an almost-finished new home still strewn with tools, the living room could have been on a Christmas card, with presents stocked under a tree covered in bright blue lights and ornaments that, somehow, had also survived the storm.

?

What was lost

When his family?s house was blown apart on April 28, the night when devastating tornadoes struck Washington County, Lester never imagined he?d be in a new house by Christmas.

?Really, in the blink of an eye, everything was all gone,? he said. ?It?s just amazing that more people didn?t perish?. to be alive after this?that?s as good a gift as you could ask for.?

But standing with his wife in their new living room ? she scrubbed the insulation from the tornado-tossed lights so she could use them on the tree ? he said the volunteers who came in droves to rebuild his neighborhood have been amazing.

Including his four houses destroyed on Stagecoach Road which belonged to family members. Eight months after the storm, all of them ? and most of their neighbors ? are back in their homes.

?I lack a little siding is really what I lack,? he said, ?and then a lot of cleanup.?

He said he still has fences to build ? and a pasture filled with unimaginable debris. Even then, he said, the landscape is forever changed. And some of his neighbors have moved away for good.

?Trees that I played in when I was a boy, barns, all that?s gone?. It?s still so much different that it?s just hard to get used to,? he said.

?Probably the worst thing is the fear of what could come this spring. I guess that?s probably laying heavy on the mind?. Ever since this happened, the wind blows here it seems like all the time.?

?

What was gained

On Dec. 14, Lester saw a sign of hope that he?d never seen before, not in his 56-year lifetime living on Stagecoach Road: Christmas carolers, more than 80 of them, walking and singing on a? warm December night.

They came from Glade Spring Church of God, walking through the neighborhood from their brand new building, rebuilt with the help of donations after it was leveled by the storm.

?[Some of] the older people, they were crying, and they would come out and sing with you,? said church usher Michael Rosenberry. ?We all had a good time. It was just a good time in the Lord.?

The carolers were there from four different churches ? all different denominations ? in Glade Spring.

?The people in the community, they?ve come together as one. Not just as churches, not just as houses, not just as buildings, we?ve all come together as one whole community,? said church member Vida DeBord, describing what?s changed since the tornadoes struck.

?We?ve met so many people that live around us that we?ve never met, and now we are friends. We see each other on the street, and everybody is talking and smiling.?

The church, meanwhile, is better than before, with a new fellowship hall, kitchen, classrooms and sound technology ? and an elevator that makes all the facilities handicapped accessible.

Though the church?s insurance didn?t cover the full cost of rebuilding, DeBord said donations poured in ? enough, even, to replace the neon cross that?s been visible on Interstate 81 since the 1970s, and to add a steeple with a bell.

?We?ve had donations,? said Steve DeBord, a deacon in the church and Vida?s husband. ?We?ve had people just get off the interstate to donate funds to rebuild the church.?

When materials came in that were more than the church needed, they were sent to their neighbors, who were working to rebuild homes along Stagecoach Road.

?God will supply, and he has,? said Vida DeBord. ?God has supplied.?

?

Christmas in Glade

Still holding the smell of fresh carpet and fresh paint, the sanctuary was nearly full on Sunday morning.

Pastor James Walls said it was special to be spending Christmas in the new building, which was dedicated just before Thanksgiving.

?On April 29 we were just staring at a pile of rubble, as much of the community behind us was,? he said. ?As you can see, today most of the houses have been rebuilt. Some people are struggling, but things are starting to get back to normal.?

Sunday?s Christmas play featured Mary and Joseph and the baby Jesus under a cardboard stable, with animals and a tiny angel with a tinsel halo; the sermon was on seeing Jesus.

?It?s not the gifts you get under the tree, it?s not how expensive they are or how beautiful they are, it?s Jesus,? Walls said, addressing the congregation on the meaning of Christmas. ?He is the light of the world?. He is for everyone, everyone in the whole world.?

As the congregation stood among the brand new pews with brand new shape-note hymnals, singing filled the air with the sounds of a guitar, piano, drums and the rising murmur of prayer.

?We?ve been blessed beyond measure. It was hard?but now we know that God had a purpose,? Walls said.

?People have seen how tragedy can bring [people] together and how God has brought us through, and have the faith here to believe in Him, trust in Him that He can bring us through it no matter what it is.?

GRAPEVINE, Texas (AP) ? Seven people believed to be related had opened their Christmas gifts and started cleaning up the wrapping paper when they were shot to death in a suburban Texas apartment, police said Sunday.

Authorities said they believe the shooter is among the dead, but got a warrant before doing a full search on the small chance that it was otherwise.

Four women and three men, aged 18 to 60, were found in an adjoining kitchen and living room area when police entered the apartment around midday, said Police Sgt. Robert Eberling. Two handguns were found near the bodies in the apartment that was decorated for the holiday with a tree, he added.

"It appears they had just celebrated Christmas. They had opened their gifts," Eberling said.

The victims have not yet been identified, but Eberling said it appears they all died of gunshot wounds. He said authorities still don't know what sparked the incident.

Grapevine Police Lt. Todd Dearing said investigators believe that all the victims were related, but that some were only visiting and didn't live in the apartment. He said police are looking for other relatives to inform.

"Seven people in one setting in Grapevine, that's never happened before. Ever," Dearing said.

He said police were performing a "meticulous" search of the apartment and he expects them to be on the scene for many hours.

Police and firefighters first rushed to the Lincoln Vineyards complex after receiving an open-ended emergency services call at about 11:30 a.m., Eberling said.

"There was an open line. No one was saying anything," he explained.

So police went into the apartment, located in a middle-class, suburban neighborhood of Grapevine, not far from the upscale Fort Worth neighborhood of Colleyville. The apartment is at the back of the complex, overlooking the athletic fields of Colleyville Heritage High School.

But many of the nearby apartments are vacant, and police said no neighbors reported hearing anything on a quiet Christmas morning when many people were not around.

Jose Fernandez, a 35-year-old heavy equipment mechanic who moved to the complex with his family about six months ago, said he always felt safe in the area, but is now afraid to let his 10-year-old son play freely outside.

"This is really outrageous especially on Christmas," said Fernandez, who was visiting family for the holiday and returned to find several police cars parked outside his home.

"This has shocked everybody. It has scared everybody. I guess something like this can happen anywhere, but seven people dead. It's just very scary," he added.

Eberling agreed the area is fairly quiet, noting this would be the first homicide in Grapevine since 2010.

Christy Posch, a flight attendant who moved to the complex about six months ago so her son could attend the high school, said she lives a few buildings away and did not hear any gunshots.

"It's all families. That's why I moved here. No burglaries, no nothing," Posch said.

Foes, backers of Yemen transition deal fight in Sanaa (Reuters)

SANAA (Reuters) ? Backers of a Yemeni Islamist party that signed on to a plan to nudge the president from power scuffled with members of a Shi'ite rebel movement frozen out of the deal in the capital Sanaa Tuesday, witnesses said.

They said loyalists of the Islah party traded blows with clubs and volleys of stones with members of the Houthi rebel movement, in the Sanaa square that has seen nearly a year of protests aimed at forcing the president from power.

Activists said at least 20 people were injured during the scuffles, which a representative of the Houthis said erupted when Islah backers attacked a tent they had set up to denounce the deal to edge President Ali Abdullah Saleh out of office.

That deal - crafted by Yemen's richer neighbors, and backed by a U.N. Security Council resolution and Washington - offers Saleh immunity from prosecution in exchange for handing power to his deputy, who is to work with a government including Islah and other opposition parties before a February presidential vote.

Saleh had backed out of the deal several times before signing it last month in Saudi Arabia, which shares U.S. fears that the struggle over Saleh's fate could descend into civil war and chaos that strengthens al Qaeda's wing in Yemen.

The deal did not include the Houthis, members of the Shi'ite Zaydi sect, whom Saleh launched an abortive campaign to crush - which also saw Saudi military intervention in 2009 - in the northwestern Saada province bordering Saudi Arabia.

U.N. Yemen envoy Jamal Benomar, who is attempting to shore up the transition deal, visited Saada this month and met with leaders of the Houthis, who have in recent months fought Sunni Islamists espousing Salafi doctrines that are influential in Saudi Arabia and condemn Shi'ites as heretics.

Washington is weighing a request for a visa from Saleh, who said he planned a U.S. visit Saturday, hours after his forces killed nine people demanding he be tried for the deaths of hundreds of protesters during 11 months of protests against him.

He told reporters his trip would include medical tests. Saleh suffered burns and other injuries in an assassination attempt in June that capped fighting between his forces and those of a tribal faction influential in Islah.

The top "counter-terrorism" official in Washington - which wages a campaign of drone strikes against alleged al Qaeda members in Yemen and assassinated Anwar al-Awlaki, a U.S. citizen, that way earlier this year - urged Saleh's deputy Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi Sunday to show restraint with protests.

Any successor to Saleh would face multiple, overlapping conflicts including renewed separatist sentiment in the south, which fought a civil war with Saleh's north in 1994 after four turbulent years of formal union.

Muslim sect claims Nigeria church attacks; 25 dead (AP)

LAGOS, Nigeria ? An explosion ripped through a Catholic church during Christmas Mass near Nigeria's capital Sunday, killing at least 25 people, officials said. A radical Muslim sect waging an increasingly sophisticated sectarian fight claimed the attack and another bombing in the restive city of Jos, as explosions also struck the nation's northeast.

The Christmas Day attacks show the growing national ambition of the sect known as Boko Haram, which is responsible for at least 491 killings this year alone, according to an Associated Press count. The assaults come a year after a series of Christmas Eve bombings in Jos claimed by the militants left at least 32 dead and 74 wounded.

The first explosion on Sunday struck St. Theresa Catholic Church in Madalla, a town in Niger state close to the capital, Abuja, authorities said. Rescue workers recovered at least 25 bodies from the church and officials continued to tally those wounded in various hospitals, said Slaku Luguard, a coordinator with Nigeria's National Emergency Management Agency.

His agency already has acknowledged it didn't have enough ambulances immediately on hand to help the wounded. Luguard also said an angry crowd that gathered at the blast site hampered rescue efforts as they refused to allow workers inside.

"We're trying to calm the situation," Luguard said. "There are some angry people around trying to cause problems."

In Jos, a second explosion struck near a Mountain of Fire and Miracles Church, government spokesman Pam Ayuba said. Ayuba said gunmen later opened fire on police guarding the area, killing one police officer. Two other locally made explosives were found in a nearby building and disarmed, he said.

"The military are here on ground and have taken control over the entire place," Ayuba said.

The city of Jos is located on the dividing line between Nigeria's predominantly Christian south and Muslim north. Thousands have died in communal clashes there over the last decade.

After the bombings, a Boko Haram spokesman using the nom de guerre Abul-Qaqa claimed responsibility for the attacks in an interview with The Daily Trust, the newspaper of record across Nigeria's Muslim north. The sect has used the newspaper in the past to communicate with public.

The U.S. Embassy in Nigeria's capital of Abuja had issued a warning Friday to citizens to be "particularly vigilant" around churches, large crowds and areas where foreigners congregate.

Several days of fighting in and around the northeastern city of Damaturu between the sect and security forces already had killed at least 61 people, authorities said. On Sunday, local police commissioner Tanko Lawan said two explosions struck Damaturu, including a blast near government offices. He declined to comment further, saying police had begun an operation to attack suspected Boko Haram sect members.

In the last year, Boko Haram has carried out increasingly bloody attacks in its campaign to implement strict Shariah law across Nigeria, a nation of more than 160 million people.

Boko Haram claimed responsibility for a Nov. 4 attack on Damaturu, Yobe state's capital, that killed more than 100 people. The group also claimed the Aug. 24 suicide car bombing of the U.N. headquarters in Nigeria's capital that killed 24 people and wounded 116 others.

The sect came to national prominence in 2009, when its members rioted and burned police stations near its base of Maiduguri, a dusty northeastern city on the cusp of the Sahara Desert. Nigeria's military violently put down the attack, crushing the sect's mosque into shards as its leader was arrested and died in police custody. About 700 people died during the violence.

While initially targeting enemies via hit-and-run assassinations from the back of motorbikes after the 2009 riot, violence by Boko Haram now has a new sophistication and apparent planning that includes high-profile attacks with greater casualties.

Boko Haram has splintered into three factions, with one wing increasingly willing to kill as it maintains contact with terror groups in North Africa and Somalia, diplomats and security sources say.

Sect members are scattered throughout northern Nigeria and nearby Cameroon, Chad and Niger.

At least 16 shot dead in Mexico's Veracruz state (Reuters)

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) ? At least 16 people were killed after a gang of armed men began shooting in the state of Veracruz on Mexico's Gulf coast on Thursday morning.

A spokeswoman for the state government told local television the gunmen first killed four people in the small town of El Higo early on Thursday. Afterwards the group attacked three buses on a highway about 60 miles southwest of the port of Tampico, killing seven others.

Five armed men were then killed after a shootout with Mexican security forces, the spokeswoman said.

Mexican authorities in October blamed a surge of killings in the city of Veracruz - some 300 miles south of Tampico - on a group linked to the country's most powerful drug lord, Joaquin "Shorty" Guzman.

Guzman has been fighting a turf war with the violent Zetas cartel, which authorities say controls Veracruz.

More than 45,000 lives have been lost since President Felipe Calderon launched a war on drug cartels in late 2006.

Amazon Stops Hiding Competitors? E-Reading Apps On The Kindle Fire

fireAmazon has stopped pretending that a group of e-reading apps it allowed onto its Android Appstore weren't available on the Kindle Fire. For whatever reason, the company was effectively hiding e-reading apps from companies like Wattpad, Kobo and Bluefire, even though they worked perfectly fine on the low-cost tablet computer. Confused about why its app didn't appear for users on the Kindle Fire, which is proving to be quite a sought-after device, Wattpad engaged in conversations with some folks over at Amazon, which apparently led to a necessary change in policy for all makers of mobile e-reading apps. It's unclear when Amazon started showing e-reading apps from rivals (including Wattpad's) on Kindle Fire, exactly, but it seems they started appearing in listings sometime yesterday afternoon. Possibly, this was part of the Kindle Fire update that was delivered earlier this week.

Another face of the U.S. recession: homeless children (Reuters)

MIAMI (Reuters) ? As her mother sat in a homeless shelter in downtown Miami, talking about her economic struggles and loss of faith in the U.S. political system, 3-year-old Aeisha Touray blurted out what sounded like a new slogan for the Occupy Wall Street protest movement.

"How dare you!" the girl said abruptly as she nudged a toy car across a conference room table at the Chapman Partnership shelter in Miami's tough and predominantly black Overtown neighborhood.

There was no telling what Aeisha was thinking as her 32-year-old mother, Nairkahe Touray, spoke of how she burned through her savings and wound up living in a car with five of her eight children earlier this year.

But how dare you indeed? How does anyone explain to kids like Aeisha and countless others how they wound up homeless in the world's richest nation?

In a report issued earlier this month, the National Center on Family Homelessness, based in Needham, Massachusetts, said 1.6 million children were living on the streets of the United States last year or in shelters, motels and doubled-up with other families.

That marked a 38 percent jump in child homelessness since 2007 and Ellen Bassuk, the center's president, attributes the increase to fallout from the U.S. recession and a surge in the number of extremely poor households headed by women.

Recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau provided a sobering backdrop. Based on new or experimental methodology aimed at providing a fuller picture of poverty, the data showed that about 48 percent of Americans are living in poverty or on low incomes.

Under the bureau's so-called Supplemental Poverty Measure for 2010, issued last month, the poverty level for a family of four was set at income anywhere below $24,343 per year.

"I see it every day," said Alfredo Brown, 73, a retired army officer and deputy director of the non-profit Chapman Partnership, when asked about child homelessness.

The organization, funded largely by a 1 percent food and beverage tax on larger restaurants to bankroll homeless programs, operates two sprawling homeless shelters in Miami-Dade County.

"I see so many children and mothers that are homeless and sleeping in their car or an abandoned building, an old bus. It's a sad situation that we live in a country that has so much and many people have so little," Brown said.

Child homelessness is a relatively new social problem in the United States, where being on the street and the stigma attached to it has long been associated with adults with alcohol or drug dependency issues.

IMPOVERISHED MOTHERS

Families accounted for less than 1 percent of the U.S. homeless population in the mid-1980s, according to Bassuk, but they now comprise about a third of the homeless population. A lot of children are dependent on poverty-stricken single moms.

"There's sort of a Third World emerging right in our backyard. You know, we talk about developing countries but look at what's going on here," Bassuk said.

To put a face to the breadth and depth of the homeless problem, a team of Reuters journalists fanned out across the country in the past week, for interviews with parents and children who are down on their luck.

From Skid Row in Los Angeles to the South Bronx in New York, a common thread of economic devastation from the recession ran throughout many of the stories these people told.

But there also was a common thread of hope running through their compressed life stories.

Little Aeisha in Miami got visibly upset as her mother spoke tearfully about the wear and tear on her children amid her struggles with a bad economy, severe depression, diabetes and chronic foot problems stemming from torn ligaments.

Touray sounded like an Occupy Wall Street protester herself, as she complained about bailout money for banks but not people. "You get treated like an animal because you're homeless," said Touray, who said she lives on just $583 a month in child support after going through a divorce last year. Her parents, who live separately in Atlanta and Chicago, are also homeless.

"Just because I'm homeless it doesn't mean that I was like nothing yesterday," said Touray, who said four small businesses she owned in Atlanta only went bust due to the recession.

She also complained about the tone-deafness of many politicians, saying they were doing nothing to ease the unemployment and inequality that have come to dominate the national conversation.

"I'm living the real deal," Touray said. "I don't need for somebody to come up here and tell me what the economy's doing. They (the politicians) need to get out here and see these children, see these parents."

RIDING THE RAILS

Across the country in Los Angeles, Reuters came across Luis Martinez, 34. A single parent, he lives with his three children at the Union Rescue Mission on a trash-strewn city block where homeless men and women stand vigil over plastic shopping carts.

But the shelter is an improvement over the time when Martinez passed nights on the L.A. subway with his children, riding the rails to nowhere.

A junior high school dropout who became unemployed after he injured his back on construction site job about six years ago, Martinez spoke proudly about how well he said his kids were doing in school.

They have a laptop computer, which they use to help do homework through free wireless connections at McDonalds and Starbucks. They also have an Xbox video game system and Martinez, who wears a necklace that says "My Kids First," has a cell phone to stay in touch with family and potential employers.

"I mean, I'm homeless but not hopeless," Martinez said.

"(It) gets easier as you go," said Jesse, Martinez's 8-year-old son.

Highlighting the shrinking middle class in America, a reporter found Tracy and Elizabeth Burger and their 8-year-old son, Dylan. The Burgers said they once earned nearly $100,000 a year combined but saw their middle-class lifestyle evaporate when Tracy lost his job in audiovisual system sales.

Unable to pay rent, they were evicted from their apartment in early 2009 and had to move into a motel. In March they moved into a cramped converted garage at Elizabeth's mother's house in Los Angeles.

Elizabeth, a former medical assistant, said she has less than six weeks left on her unemployment insurance and was anxiously watching this week's standoff in Congress over extending those payments, along with the payroll tax cut for 160 million Americans.

The congressional debate highlighted the partisan bickering that has made this a tumultuous year in U.S. politics, while throwing Washington's ability to make sound economic policy into doubt.

In central Florida, Justin Santiago, 15, said he was not surprised when he, his parents and three younger siblings landed in a downtown Orlando shelter last September.

Since the national economic collapse in 2008, his out-of-work family bounced from one relative's home to another, and left California in search of employment and stability.

"I wasn't shocked. When the economy's going down and it just drops, it's out of control," Justin said.

EYES ON THE PRIZE

In 16 years of marriage, his parents, Theresa and Timothy Santiago, managed to provide for their family by working multiple jobs, earning about $20,000 in their best year. But work dried up and the family set out for Florida last spring in search of cheaper living expenses.

After a run of more bad luck, they found their way to the Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida shelter. But Justin is taking eighth grade honors classes now and says his family's recent experience will not keep him from pursuing his dream career in video game production and becoming an Internet success story.

"It will get better for me and my family," he said. "I'll be making billions, I know that."

Antonio Dixon, 26, knows all about things getting better. His mother, Corenthia, said he bounced between at least a dozen homeless shelters growing up in Miami and Atlanta.

He eventually won a football scholarship at the University of Miami and fought dyslexia to become the first person in his family to graduate college.

"They had me study hard every hour," Dixon told Reuters.

He has since gone on to play defensive tackle for the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles, making good on his boyhood dream.

Dixon has been sidelined by a torn tricep since early October. But he seems confident about overcoming adversity yet again and plans on being in the starting lineup next season.

His advice to homeless kids is to stay in school and get focused on whatever it is they really want to do in life.

"Just keep on doing something you like and don't give up," Dixon said. I had to work myself up from the bottom to the top. I did that. Don't let nobody stand in your way. You just got to go and get it. You can't be afraid to take a chance on life."

Bassuk, a psychiatrist and Harvard Medical School professor, said medical problems and under-achievement in school were among the things that often go hand in hand with childhood homelessness.

"These are kids who don't have any opportunities," she said. "If you look at some of the educational variables, they're doing really poorly. And they're kids who can do OK. They just don't have appropriate support.

"It just seems that on every front this is a very vulnerable group of kids," she said.

Arlington grave markers may need replacement

Thousands of grave markers at Arlington National Cemetery may need to be replaced or added to accurately account for the dead, following a meticulous Army review of each of the nearly 260,000 headstones and niche covers on the grounds.

In a report to Congress on Thursday, the Army found potential discrepancies between headstones and cemetery paperwork on about 64,000 grave markers ? about one in four.

Congress ordered the review last year following reports of misidentified and misplaced graves that led to the ouster of the cemetery's top executives.

The report found no further evidence of misplaced graves, though it cautioned that its review is not complete and that some errors could have gone undetected.

    7. A contagion of conflict in China?

There are potentially thousands of minor errors, including misspelled names, or incorrect military ranks and dates of birth and death.

Story: Senator: Arlington Cemetery has improved since scandal

The Army compared information on every headstone to its internal records, scouring handwritten logs of the dead from the Civil War and a hodgepodge of other records to verify accuracy.

In an interview, the cemetery's executive director, Kathryn Condon, said reviews are ongoing and it's premature to try to estimate exactly how many headstones may need replacement.

To be sure, many of the 64,000 discrepancies will turn up no problem with a headstone ? it may be as simple as a typo on an internal record. And in many cases, the discrepancies are not errors at all but reflect past practices at the cemetery that are now considered outdated.

Story: Volunteers lay 90K wreaths at Arlington cemetery

One of the biggest surprises uncovered by the review was that in most of the early 20th century, the cemetery did not include the name of a wife on a headstone when she was buried next to her husband. Under current practices, the name of the spouse is etched onto the back of the headstone.

Condon said the cemetery will correct that by adding the spouse's name to the gravesite. She said it is not only the right thing to do but is also required by law.

Accounting for the forgotten spouses alone will require thousands of corrections, officials said. In some cases, replacement headstones will be made. In cases where the headstones are considered historic, footstones will be added.

The Army and a team of 70 analysts are undertaking painstaking reviews of every case where they find a potential discrepancy to ensure that records are made accurate. Those reviews are expected to be completed in the summer.

The process began with a hand count, using simple mechanical clickers, of every gravesite ? 259,978 to be exact. (More than 300,000 people are buried at Arlington, but some grave markers have two or more names.) Then, during the summer, members of the Army's ceremonial Old Guard unit used iPhones to photograph the front and back of every headstone, so the information could be compared against internal records.

Officials cited Christian Keiner, a Civil War veteran from New York who died in 1919, as a typical example. The headstone reflected only his name, but internal records showed that his wife, Caroline Keiner, had also been buried there in 1915. In addition, the internal records spelled Caroline Keiner's name as "Kiner." Officials reviewed handwritten Census records from 1900 and Civil war-era military and pension records to confirm that "Keiner" was indeed the correct spelling.

John Schrader, co-chair of the Gravesite Accountability Task Force, said recordkeeping methods varied widely over the cemetery's 147-year history, from handwritten logs to index cards, to typewritten forms and two different computer databases. That sometimes compounded problems, as transcription errors were common. To avoid those problems, all of the old records have been scanned and digitized, rather than transcribed, to avoid introducing further errors, he said.

The sheer size of the cemetery also made the task difficult. It is the second-largest cemetery in the country as well as a tourist site that draws more than 4 million visitors a year, all while conducting nearly 30 burials a day, some with full military honors.

The most significant part of the review, Condon said, is that the cemetery for the first time has a single, reliable database that will allow officials to fix past mistakes and plan for the future.

The cemetery is currently testing an interactive, web-based version of its database that will allow visitors to click on a digital map to see gravesites and learn who is buried there, ensuring the cemetery's records are open and accessible going forward.

"We'll have 300 million American fact-checkers," Schrader said.

Gingrich and Bachmann duke it out early in Republican debate

Michele Bachmann came out swinging at Newt Gingrich and his $1.6 million in earnings from Freddie Mac.

In the first hour of the GOP debate in Iowa, Newt Gingrich and Michele Bachmann went toe to toe over Gingrich's $1.6 million in earnings as a consultant to Freddie Mac.?

The Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann said Gingrich "had his hand out and received $1.6 million to ... keep the scam going in Washington, D.C."

Gingrich shot back that he never lobbied members of Congress on behalf of the quasi-government housing agency, and that Bachmann "ought to have facts before make wild allegations."

During a live chat on DCDecoder, CTognott wasn't buying Gingrich's explanation:?

"To be clear: if you take money to let a company use your letterhead (metaphorically, I mean), it is a matter of pretty shifty semantics to claim you're not a lobbyist. Perhaps not technically, but you certainly couldn't deny a charge of influence peddling."

Mitt Romney looked on and smiled. During the same chat on DCDecoder.com, Jennifer Marsico at American Enterprise noted, during the Bachmann-Gingrich exchange: "Romney's got to be loving this right now--Gingrich is the big target tonight and Mitt's not even saying a word."

As The Christian Science Monitor's Linda Feldmann noted today: "A new Rasmussen poll of Iowa Republicans taken Tuesday shows Mitt Romney now in the lead in Iowa and Newt Gingrich down to second place, losing 12 percentage points since the last Rasmussen poll a month ago. "Former Utah Gov. John Huntsman was out of the blocks early, sounding more confident and self-assured than in previous debates.

As Tumblr blogger "Shortformblog" commented: "Statement of the night, from Huntsman: "We are getting screwed as Americans!" #IowaDebate [via Twitter]

Newt Gingrich: 8 of the GOP idea man's more unusual ideas

Newt Gingrich is a big ideas guy. Ask anybody. Some of the ideas end up working, like the one a couple of decades ago that the Republican Party could actually take control of the House after 40 years of Democratic rule. Others are a little out there. An elaborate system of space mirrors to light highways? Check.?Say what you will, but at least the former House speaker ? and now the clear front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination ? has a fertile imagination. Here are some of his more unusual ideas.

- Linda Feldmann,?Staff writer

Mr. Gingrich loves the idea of establishing a lunar colony to exploit the moon?s mineral resources. Mitt Romney, Gingrich?s top challenger for the nomination, chose that as his top example of an area of disagreement with Gingrich at the Dec. 10 debate.

?I'm not in favor of spending that kind of money to do that,? said Mr. Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts.

Gingrich?s response: ?I'm happy to defend the idea that America should be in space and should be there in an aggressive, entrepreneurial way.?

The former speaker mentioned moon colonies at a recent town hall meeting in Bluffton, S.C., when a student asked about working for NASA. But it?s not clear that Gingrich believes lunar colonies should be funded publicly. In the past, he has proposed cutting back on NASA and incentivizing private companies to offer space travel.

Christmas In Havana: President Obama prevails on Cuban family travel rules

But the standoff in Congress over food exports and family travel to Cuba is a reminder, writes guest blogger Anya Landau French, of how far some are willing to go to punish Cuba's leaders.

Whenever someone asked me why we have the same anachronistic policy toward an island nation 90 ninety from our shores that we have had for half a century, I generally tell them that Cuba simply "doesn't matter." In a big-picture sense, our policy hasn't changed (or has only gotten hotter) since the Cold War ended and left two combatants behind on the field.

But this week, Cuba finally mattered, and it tested the resolve of a US president. After nearly a week of brinksmanship over bigger, far more sensitive issues played out, there were a slew of bills ready to be packaged and voted on by a weary, anxious-to-get-out-of-here Congress, but for a provision that would have ruined the Christmas and New Year holidays for thousands of Cuban Americans and their families in Cuba. But after House Republicans filed a bill yesterday morning offering Democrats a take-it-or-leave it choice on their Consolidated Appropriations Bill for FY 2012, a White House seeking to protect a campaign promise fulfilled - unrestricted family travel to Cuba - prevailed, and the House leadership agreed to remove the offending provision if Senate Democrats would then move the agreed upon bill. The bill to be voted on is here, and the Cuba provision had been in Division C (Section 634 ? which is gone).

Count me among those who doubted the president and the Congress. Not at first, of course. For months I thought the president's veto threat was enough to settle the Cuba question early. But for the Cuba provision to stay in the bill nearly to the very end tells us that the House Republican leadership ? presumably urged on by Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart ? believed the president and the Senate Democrats would cave. It also reminds us how very much Cuba matters to a certain few. It was a sobering reminder to all the Cuban Americans these few claim to represent how very far these representatives would go to pursue their personal ideology on Cuba ? regardless of whom in their districts it might harm. ??

RELATED: Think you know Latin America? Take our geography quiz

The White House stood firm and stood up for those Cuban Americans, and Senator Reid stood by the president (he's not exactly a Cuba sanctions reformer). But there were casualties, to the lobby no one thought would lose.

Two provisions that would have simplified one-way food trade (exports) to Cuba, and made our exports more competitive without offering Cuba any credit, were dropped ? even one that had been adopted for several years in a row to define how to comply with the cash-in-advance terms of the trade. This latter provision, because it was always tied to the fiscal year, had no practical effect but was symbolically important to the agriculture community nonetheless, and it telegraphed to them that Congress understood their priorities even if it couldn't manage to enact them fully. I imagine there will be plenty of questions about why provisions that would help America's export standing, and help feed the Cuban people (something Cuban agriculture reforms have still not achieved) had to come out in order to save Christmas for thousands of Cuban Americans who shouldn't have been on the block either. Who goes after food trade in this day and age, particularly after Congress resolved never again to use food as a weapon with the passage of the Trade Sanctions Reform and Export Enhancement Act of 2000? To the two or three congressmembers for whom their personal obsession with punishing Cuba's leaders ? regardless of who gets hurt in the process ? matters most of all.
